Roger Stoltzfus

2023

Soft-spoken and fully committed to the cause of affordable, accessible ice in Bozeman, Rodger Stoltzfus brought a strong mechanical and practical orientation to the early days of BAHA. He helped to instill conservative economics with innovative solutions. Before the days of a club-owned ice resurfacer, Rodger fabricated shovels from metal barrels for clearing the ice. He also sourced a used compressor from Tijuana to be used as BAHA’s first ice plant. Rodger was the original refrigeration technician at Bogert Park. He trained volunteers how to maintain the compressor and all things refrigeration, eventually helping move that equipment to Haynes Pavilion. He also taught BAHA’s ice resurfacing volunteers how to make a good sheet of ice - a culture that continues today. Rodger still owns an ice resurfacer and is known to drive around in the middle of the night, clearing ice at various schools and parks. He is wise and an extraordinary doer of good deeds.
